Atlético Madrid took advantage of Valencia's defeat earlier in the day to move ahead of them to second spot after beating Espanyol 2-3 on Saturday evening. Maxi picked up Agüero's pass to give his side the lead in the seventh minute, but the locals had several chances to equalise, with José Callejón bringing a couple of saves out of Leo Franco and firing another shot wide, and Nené seeing his free kick tipped over the top by the keeper.

Sergio Sánchez did level the scores eventually after chesting on a long pass from Nico Pareja, but later in the second half a persistent Agüero restored the lead, beating Kameni at the third attempt after his first two shots were blocked. Nené got the ball in the net only to see his strike ruled out for offside, and with the game in injury time Maxi scored again to wrap things up. There was still time however for Valdo to get another one back, a goal which just keeps the Catalans out of the relegation spots pending Sunday's games.
