Espanyol stay in the bottom three despite a 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao, Recreativo's win elsewhere leaving them still in eighteenth spot. The Catalans were unlucky not to go behind early on when Javi Martínez turned a shot against the crossbar. But with eight minutes to go to the break Moisés got clear of his marker to head Luis García's corner in on the near post.

Espanyol could have gone further ahead before the interval, Luis García almost catching out his old team-mate Iraizoz with a long free kick, and Nené forcing the keeper in to a good save after an inswinging corner had been scrambled off the line.

Caparrós brought on his new signing Toquero, who had a header saved by Kameni soon after coming on. And a few minutes later the striker headed the ball back in to the area, Iraola controlling the ball on his chest with his back to goal before beating the keeper with an acrobatic overhead kick. It was enough to save a point and keep Athletic six points clear of their opponents in the table.
