Deportivo moved up to sixth, just a point now behind Villarreal after they beat Pellegrini's side 3-0. Lafita started things off in the second minute, beating Diego López from a wide angle after Riki had headed on a long kick from Aranzubia.

Riki went close and had a headed goal disallowed for offside before the break, and Verdú and Riki both fired shots wide after the restart. Villarreal's only real chance was a possible penalty appeal by Cazorla, but with an hour on the clock Lafita picked up Riki's headed pass and drove in a long shot which took a deflection off a defender to wrong-foot the keeper.

Six minutes later it was all over after Riki picked up Verdú's long ball and cut in past Capdevila to clip a shot in off the far post. The visitors could have pulled one back late on when Filipe tripped Mati Fernández in the area, but Aranzubia dived to save Marcos Senna's penalty and round off a perfect night for the fans in the Riazor stadium.
