Atlético Madrid had a chance of making it up to the Champions League spots when they started the last match of the weekend against city neighbours Getafe, but in the end they had to make do with sixth spot after a 1-1 draw.

With Abel Resino in charge at the Calderón stadium for the first time, hopes were high. But the visitors almost went ahead early on, Albín heading a corner against the bar and Uche bringing a good save out of Leo Franco with another header. Maxi and Diego Forlán both tested Jacobo at the other end however, and with just over half an hour on the clock Forlán connected with a Seitaridis cross to open the scoring.

Atlético couldn't build on their lead though, and the visitors had a chance to equalise with ten minutes to go when they were awarded a penalty after Albín was brought down in the area by Pablo and Seitaridis. The Argentinian forward sent his spot kick over the bar, but he made up for his mistake before the final whistle, diving in to redirect Uche's overhead kick past the keeper to save a point for his side.
