Third placed Sevilla stayed nine points behind Real Madrid after a 1-2 win over Athletic Bilbao in the first match on Saturday evening. The match was a rehearsal for next Wednesday's cup semi-final, although most of the actors will be different, particularly for the home side who changed virtually all of their first team line up.

Despite the changes Athletic took the lead midway through the first half, Gabilondo blasting a shot which Palop got a hand to but couldn't stop after a corner was only cleared as far as him on the edge of the area.

Before half time though Kanouté pulled down a cross from Mosquera to equalise, and the striker gave the local fans a scare or two before he battled through for a second goal after the restart. They will be hoping for a different outcome in the Cup, but Kanouté will take some stopping.
