The gap between second placed Real Madrid and third placed Sevilla widened to twelve points after the Andalusians were beaten 0-1 by Getafe. The locals had by far the better chances, with debutant keeper Stojkovic saving from Maresca early on and Squillaci heading the resulting corner wide. Soldado just failed to hit the target in an isolated attack, but Luis Fabiano had a goal disallowed for a borderline offside and then had another effort cleared off the line by Cata Díaz before the break.

Luis Fabiano continued to cause problems after the restart, the Brazilian striker hitting the post and then heading wide soon afterwards. With a quarter of an hour to go however Del Moral just failed to turn in Contra's cross, and five minutes later Gavilán won the ball ahead of Squillaci and ran on to strike the winner past Palop.

Sevilla almost saved a point when Kanouté headed against the post and Luis Fabiano also hit the upright on the follow up. But their side fell to their seventh home defeat of the season, and Getafe's much criticised coach Víctor Muñoz lives to fight another day.
