Espanyol's late escape act continued with a 0-3 win over relegation rivals Sporting Gijón, and they moved to within a point of their opponents in the table. Tamudo fired a shot wide before Nené volleyed the Catalans in to the lead from Moisés long ball before the break, although Kameni had to be on his toes to tip an effort from Carmelo over the bar soon after the restart.

Pochettino's side wrapped things up though with two goals in as many minutes midway through the second half, Román Martínez firing in a shot which took a deflection off a defender, and José Callejón beating Lafuente for a third time with an angled shot.

Sporting ended with ten men after Barral was rather harshly sent off for catching Pareja as he turned to shoot and the Asturians now need a quick reaction if they are to avoid an early return to the second division. This was their fifth defeat in a row.
