Second Division B - play-offs, day 1

Changes to the format this season, with the four regional group winners playing-off for two of the four promotion spots, and the two losers of those matches joining the winners of six other ties in a knock-out format for the other two places.

Cádiz got off to a good start in the "group I" play-offs with a 1-0 win over Real Unión, Toedtli scoring the only goal in the tenth minute. And Cartagena got the edge over Alcoyano with a 2-1 victory, Samuel getting the winner after Fernando Martín had cancelled out Héctor yuste's opener for the hosts. In the other six matches,

Lorca look like getting a place in the last eight after beating Marbella 0-2, Jairo and Elías getting a goal in each half. Villarreal B are the only reserve team to make the play-offs, and they too are close to going through after a 0-2 victory at Zamora, with Matilla opening the scoring and Barodia putting through his own net before half time.

Real Jaén were a team nobody wanted to meet, and they have the edge over another ex second division side Leganés after a 2-2 draw. Arriaga and Esparza twice gave the Andalusians the lead, but Javi Vicente and Mario equalised both times for the locals. Two other strong candidates for promotion are Poli Ejido and Ponferradina, and they cancelled each other out in a 0-0 draw.

Sabadell and Cultural Leonesa are also level after their match ended 1-1, with Iván Mateo netting first for the visitors and Pradas levelling the scores after the restart. And there was another 0-0 draw between Sabadell's Catalan neighbours Sant Andreu and Madrid based Alcorcón, with veteran keeper Raúl Arribas saving the visitors from defeat.

Four sides are also meeting over two legs to avoid the two remaining relegation spots. Terrassa are close to staying up after beating Antequera 2-0, with Raúl Pérez and Curto getting the goals. The other tie between two B sides is well balanced though, with Las Palmas Atlético and Sporting Gijón B playing out a 0-0 draw. (17.05.09)
