Villarreal came to Pamplona full of confidence after their impressive win in the Europa League qualifier on Thursday, and they started the new league campaign with a 1-1 draw at Osasuna. Pandiani went close early on and Monreal had to clear off the line from Nilmar at the other end, but the visitors struck first when Cazorla's shot took a wicked deflection off Puñal to wrong-foot Ricardo.

Five minutes later though Pandiani equalised after Aranda set him up, and it was back to square one. Villarreal had already lost Marcos Senna to an injury, but they looked the better team after the break, Ricardo doing well to keep out Pires and Nilmar. Camacho threw on new signings Calleja and Camuñas, but in the end both sides decided that a point was a reasonable start to the season.
