Up to now Athletic Bilbao were the only team to keep up the pace with the leaders, but the Basque side fell three points behind after losing 1-0 to Tenerife. Caparrós rested several of his key players, leaving Llorente on the bench at the start and lining up Etxeberría in attack with a boy less than half his age, the 16 year old Muniain. They paid the price however, the Canary Islanders all over their opponents throughout the game.

Nino in particular was unlucky not to score on several occasions, especially in the first half when Gorka kept him out two or three times, and when the referee ruled out his strike for a borderline offside. Alfaro also tried his luck either side of half time, but with the game seemingly heading for a draw Mikel Alonso headed in the ex Sevilla winger's free kick to secure a valuable win for the hosts.
