Sporting Gijón picked up the point they needed to stay in the top flight in a 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid, Racing's defeat at Valladolid meaning they are now sure of staying up. Atlético's battles are elsewhere, and with two cup finals coming up in the next ten days Quique left most of his first choice players at home. His plans took a blow though in the tenth minute when his number two keeper Asenjo was carried off with a serious knee injury, and with De Gea left out of the squad young keeper Joel was forced to take over.

Nothing much happened though for the rest of the first half, the best efforts from Bilic and Salvio failing to find the target. A few minutes after the interval though Lora fired a shot just wide of the post, and with an hour coming up on the clock Lora found De las Cuevas for him to steer a shot wide of the keeper. A quarter of an hour later Ibrahima equalised after Tiago played on Ujfalusi's cross, and in the end both sides settled for a point which left them safely up in mid-table.
