Second Division - Day 5

Rayo Vallecano top the second division pending Betis's Sunday game with Cartagena after beating Castellón 1-3 on Saturday evening. Rubén Castro got the first midway through the first half after Coke set him up, and Piti and Aganzo added two more at the beginning and the end of the second half. Ulloa's last minute consolation couldn't prevent his side from dropping to the bottom of the table, and local fans got out the white hankies at the end.

Hércules are also in the top three after winning 0-1 against struggling Celta earlier in the evening. Abraham Paz headed the only goal from a corner early in the second half to leave the Galicians in the relegation zone. Coach Eusebio is going to have a difficult week.

Recreativo drop down the table after a 1-0 defeat at regional neighbours Cádiz. The visitors played half the game with ten men after Mora was sent off for a second bookable offence, and the home side took advantage to clock up their first victory of the season thanks to a strike from Ormazábal.

Levante are now level on points with the Huelva based side after a 0-1 victory at Las Palmas. Both sides came in to the match unbeaten, but a second half goal from Rubén Suárez after a mistake by keeper Assman was enough to give the three points to the away team.

Real Unión recorded their first win since being promoted, beating Girona 0-2 to climb out of the relegation zone above their opponents. Gorka Brit got the first ten minutes in to the second half, and Tortolero put through his own net a quarter of an hour later.

The Basque side are now level with Murcia, who could only draw 2-2 against Salamanca. Chando opened the scoring for the locals, and got his second of the night after Linares had equalised under controversial circumstances, the locals claiming that keeper Elía had been fouled in the build up. Goikoetxea saved a point for the visitors though with a header in injury time.

A 2-2 draw as well between Villarreal B and Albacete, with Marco Rubén saving a point for the locals near the end. Montero had given them the lead early on, but Stuani equalised before the break, and Joan Tomás missed a penalty after the restart before substitute Salva put the visitors momentary ahead. Cartagena held on to top spot after a 0-0 draw at Betis on Sunday lunchtime. The locals will be happier with the result after Tato headed against the bar on the stroke of half time, and then Tapia's side had Arzu and then Carlos García sent off in the second half.

Later in the evening Real Sociedad finally got the home win they have been looking for all season, the Basque side beating Huesca 2-0. B team striker Griezmann opened the scoring with a shot from the edge of the area shortly before half time, and Carlos Bueno rounded keeper Miguel to score the second with a couple of minutes to go.

Elche recorded their first win of the season, beating Córdoba 3-0 to move out of the relegation zone at last. Usero got the first with a powerful shot six minutes before half time, and Santos headed the second from Saúl's cross before the break. Ceballos scored in his own net trying to clear ahead of Perera after the restart, and the sending off of Acciari a couple of minutes did little to change the result.

Elsewhere Numancia won 0-1 at Gimnàstic to join Betis, Rayo and Hércules on ten points. Both teams started the weekend level in the table, and although the Catalans had the better chances throughout, Kike Sola turned in Javier Flaño's cross in the dying minutes to tie up the three points. (27.09.09)
