Heroes and Villains 1999/2000
Salva

Top scorers in the Spanish league. Salva is this season's Pichichi with 27 goals, including 11 penalties (he never missed one by the way). His team Racing came up against second placed Catanha in the last match, but the game ended without goals. Catanha shares second place with Hasselbaink. Makaay got another for league champions Deportivo and ends up fourth. All his 22 goals came from out play, and if he had taken any of the four penalties awarded to his team during the season he could have given Salva a close run. Other scorers on the day were Milosevic, Kluivert (2), Víctor, Piojo and Canabal, who enters the table for the first time.

Players with most red and yellow cards. The Vinny Joneses of Spanish football. Although he didn't play in the last match, Téllez is the hit-man of Spanish football this year. Santi got himself another yellow this week to share second place with Guti. Five sendings off this week, with serious incidents in the Valencia Zaragoza match. Substitute Yordi got a yellow before he even got on for stepping on to the pitch early and another five minutes later for a hard tackle. Their manager Txetxu Rojo was also given two yellow cards for protesting, and he was reported by referee Medina Cantalejo for confronting him in the tunnel after the game and pushing and insulting him. Rojo denies it, but could get a long ban at the start of next season. Two Racing players were also sent off, Txema for two bookable offences and Ceballos for handling outside of the area in the last minute. The other villain was Atlético's Baraja, who received his marching orders after getting a second yellow. Surprisingly, the club with most red and yellow cards this season is Celta, with 138, followed by Athletic Bilbao and Atlético Madrid with 135 each.

Casillas

Day 38: Best goalkeepers (have to have played at least twenty five matches to qualify). Casillas gets our Zamora prize as the best goalkeeper of the league. The youngster, who celebrated his 19th birthday this week, has been instrumental in tightening up a Real Madrid defence which was leaking goals at the start of the season. The runner up is Herrera, who has been a revelation this season and has played every minute of every match this season, one of only two to do so (the other is Oviedo's Esteban). Clean sheets this week also for Songo'o, Alberto and Contreras.

Llonch Andreu

Referees (sum total of red and yellow cards). Contrary to our report last week, Llonch Andreu was called upon to referee a match this week, and he produced seven yellows and a red to move to the top of our table and take the white stick of the year award. At least a Catalan has won something this season! A triple prize this week goes to Medina Cantalejo, who takes the coveted one-eyed man award (only given once this season) to add to the Pinocchio's nose medal and a very large white stick. Medina showed nine yellows and two reds to Zaragoza players (see above) as against one yellow to Valencia, got into a bust up in the tunnel after the match with Zaragoza manager Txetxu Rojo and others, and produced a report claiming he was physically assaulted and abused which Zaragoza staff say is totally untrue. Finally our best wishes to Díaz Vega, who hung up his boots and whistle this week after reaching the statutory retirement age.
