Heroes and Villains 2011/2012
messi Pichichi

Last season we were raving about Messi and Ronaldo scoring 53 goals each, but this year they have gone beyond our wildest dreams with 73 and 60 respectively.

The top two have been in a league of their own once again, but below them there were some good performances from players such as Falcao, whose 36 goals may have taken the prize in other seasons. Benzema finished fourth in our chart, ahead of Llorente and Soldado.

A total of 1,050 goals were scored in the league this season, eight more than the year before. For the record, Madrid scored 121 of those and Barça 114, both smashing the all-time record. First division teams scored another 184 in Europe and 159 in the cup, making 1,393 in all.

The highest scoring weekend was week 24, with 38 goals in all, and the lowest was week 18 with precisely 18. See the weekly reports below for more details.

Medel Villains

This season's "Villains" award goes to Sevilla's Medel, who picked up 19 yellow cards, one red and six matches suspension throughout the year, keeping the Chilean midfielder just ahead of Rayo's Casado.

Five players were sent off in the last games of last season, Getafe's Sarabia, Miguel Torres and Miku, Zaragoza's Dujmovic and Barça's Dani Alves, and all are expected to miss the opening game of the season together with Paredes (Zaragoza), Javi López (Espanyol), Lacen (Getafe), Cortés (Granada), Damián and Lora (Sporting), who all completed the five yellow card cycle.

There were a total of 2,611 yellow cards and 179 reds in the league and cup this year, an average of 5.0 yellows and 0.4 reds per game. On a club basis, the top villains were Valencia, Getafe and Zaragoza, who clocked up 208, 201 and 193 points respectively. Valdés Zamoras

Víctor Valdés took the Zamora prize again this year to win his fourth title in a row and his fifth overall, , taking him level with Barça's mythical keeper Ramallets. At the age of 30 he has a chance of breaking all the records.

It was a close thing in the end though, with Casillas pushing him right up until the last day, and only losing out after letting in a goal against Mallorca. Only one other keeper let in less than a goal a game, Valencia's Guaita ending with a 26/25 record.

Zaragoza's Roberto was the only keeper to play every minute of every match, although Osasuna's Andrés was a permanent fixture since replacing Rieso at half time on the opening day. Some 45 keepers were used in all.
