Pichichis
Rivaldo moved clear at the top of the goalscorers chart with a penalty in the midweek round of league games making up day 8 of the calendar. Bolo also got his first goal in some time, although it wasn't much use as Rayo lost to Oviedo 4-1. Two new names enter the table this week, Dely Valdés, who got his fifth of the league, and Diego Tristán, Deportivo's flamboyant new signing, who finally came good scoring a hat-trick against Las Palmas. Tristán was signed as early season cover for Makaay, who picked up a long term injury at Euro 2000, but he had done very little up until this game. Curiously, Makaay made his reappearance in the same match, replacing Tristán and getting the last goal, and manager Irureta now has a problem on his hands, with Pandiani and Turu Flores also claiming a place in the side.
