European competitions resumed this week, with seven
Spanish teams participating in the two tournaments. Barcelona and Real Madrid
scored seven goals between them in the Champions League, with Kluivert getting
his fourth of the season, Saviola opening his account for Barcelona, and Figo
(from the penalty spot) and Roberto Carlos both getting their second of the
season for Madrid. Figo and Roberto Carlos both repeated the act in Saturday's
5-1 rout of Espanyol, and with Raúl getting his first league goal of the
season, Madrid now have three players in the top ten. Saviola also scored again
at the weekend. Plenty of goals too in the UEFA cup, with the three Spanish
teams scoring eight between them without letting any in. Karpin scored two of
Celta's four, with everybody letting Catanha take the penalty after he fought
of Gustavo López the last time his team were awarded a spot kick. The
Hispano-Brazilian got another at the weekend as Celta held on to top spot in
the league, and he now joins the group on four goals. Two players who were
teammates last season at Espanyol are also in our chart after getting their
third in the league, Arteaga, now at Rayo Vallecano, and De Lucas, who came
back to Espanyol after a brief loan spell at Paris Saint Germain. Finally the
only player to hit a double in the league this weekend was ex Real Madrid and
Racing veteran Amavisca, who helped Deportivo to a late win at Alavés.
