Easy pickings for the
Spanish strikers in Europe this week, with another 19 goals being scored by the
seven teams. Raúl got his first two in Europe this season against
Anderlecht, including Real Madrid's 700th all time goal in European
competitions. Madrid are the first club to reach that landmark. Raúl
added another at the weekend as well to head up our table with seven goals in
all, and in the same match Zidane got his third in a row in the league to
answer his critics and start to pay back some of that transfer fee.
His main rival for the
Pichichi title over the last few years, Rivaldo, has yet to open his account in
the Spanish league. Although the Brazilian international returned from his
recuperation period in Brazil in time to play against Real Sociedad, his
manager decided it was too early for a comeback and left him in Barcelona.
Rivaldo threw a wobbly and got back on the plane to join Scaloni's squad for
the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Chile. With another vital World Cup
game in November, this could happen again soon and Rivaldo may miss the derby
match with Real Madrid. In his absence, Kluivert is again taking the weight,
and he scored his fifth of the season to put his side on their way to victory.
Two others who got goals in
Europe this week were Eto'o and Yordi, both of whom enter our chart this week.
Eto'o blotted his copy book again though at the weekend getting himself sent
off (see villains section for more details). Celta's Benni McCarthy got a game
against Sigma in a team full of reserves and scored his first goal since
rejoining the squad after his transfer to Middlesborough was called off. His
teammate Edú got his third in all competitions at the weekend to join
Catanha in the table. Valencia also rested key players against Chernomorets but
still hit five, with two from Juan Sánchez.
Quique De Lucas got his
fourth goal this week to take him level with Gastón Casas at the top of
the league Pichichi chart. Casas claimed the only goal against Las Palmas at
first, but as his shot was heading out of the ground before it hit Schurrer in
the face it went down as an own goal in the referee's book. Martín
Palermo is only one behind after his second match winning goal in a row, and
his team are now second, their highest league placing ever.
