A
better week this for the front men, with 31 goals in the league and another
seven in Europe midweek. Diego Tristán opened up a gap on the rest with
his nineteenth league goal, and is en route to becoming Deportivo's first ever
Pichichi (we think). He was upstaged though by his colleague Makaay, who
started the game against Espanyol on the right wing but still managed to score
a couple of goals and set up Tristán for the other. Morientes was the
only other one of the top five to keep in touch with him, scoring his
eighteenth league goal at the weekend. He missed a couple midweek though
against Bayern Munich, but luckily Guti did better when he replaced him near
the end, scoring his side's second to tie up the match. Kluivert and Rivaldo
were both injured this week, and it was left to Luis Enrique and Saviola to get
the goals for Barcelona. Lucho scored twice to take his tally for the season to
ten and to set up that much talked about European semi-final with Real Madrid.
Better though was Saviola with five goals in eight days, getting the winner in
the game against Panathinaikos and then adding two more in the weekend game
with Alavés. He catches up Catanha, who hit the crossbar twice this
Sunday, including once from the penalty spot, but couldn't score. Víctor
could though, and his two second half goals from dead ball kicks gave
Villarreal a much needed win. All talk this week was about who would be going
to the World Cup alongside Raúl, Morientes and Tristán, and just
in case Camacho takes a fourth forward, Urzaiz and Luque both put in their
claims with goals this weekend. In the end though he may take Munitis, who has
not played much for Real Madrid this season but is a useful man to bring on as
a late substitute and can also play on either wing. (15.04.02) |
