Spain hit five past Northern
Ireland in their pre-World Cup warm up game, with Raúl scoring twice to
take his tally for his country to 25, and Morientes also getting his name on
the scoresheet. Raúl's goals came as a welcome relief for the young
striker, who has gone six league matches in a row without scoring. This weekend
it was left up to Roberto Carlos, Figo and Guti (twice) to give them their
victory over Tenerife which keeps them in the running for another league title.
Interestingly league leaders Valencia do not have anyone in our chart, their
joint top scorers in all club competitions being Juan Sánchez and
Rufete, with eight goals apiece. They do have a hell of a defence though, as
Tamudo may well find out next Saturday. He got his fifteenth of the season at
the weekend against Villarreal.
Raúl's drought in the
league is not the only one though amongst the top strikers. None of the top
seven scored, with Diego Tristán and Kluivert both out injured and
Morientes hobbling off early. Tristán is likely to be out for a couple
of weeks or so after picking up an injury training with Spain. Rivaldo too is
in the wars, and injuries to his knee and ankle have kept him out for half the
season. He managed to score a late consolation goal at Celta even though he was
limping badly, but he will miss the first leg Champions League match against
Real Madrid on Tuesday. Mostovoi got the first goal for Celta which takes them
above their opponents on head-to-head results. (22.04.02) |
