A
record number of goals this weekend in the league, 39 in all, as teams gear up
for the end of the season. Not many of them though for our leaders: Diego
Tristán was only just back from injury and only played the last few
minutes, and Raúl hasn't got a league goal in seven weeks now, although
he did get a couple for Spain recently. He didn't need to score himself though
in the midweek Champions League semi-final at Barcelona, setting up both goals
for Zidane (his eleventh of the season) and McManaman. Kluivert and Saviola
were ineffective in that game, but they did get one each in the league at the
weekend, as did Luis Enrique, also his eleventh since the summer. Not before
Víctor put Villarreal ahead though, and for a while it looked as though
the minnows were going to swallow the whales for the third time in a row at the
Nou Camp. Tamudo also gave leaders Valencia a fright when he drove home an
early penalty, although two from Baraja saved the day for the ten men.
Elsewhere Luque got a last minute consolation goal which could not save the
head of his manager Sergio Kresic, and Bolic (Rayo) and Dely Valdés
(Málaga) joined the group on eleven goals in all competitions with
respective goals for their sides, the former as Rayo made virtually sure of
first division football and Dely from the penalty spot to save a point at
Coruña. (29.04.02) |
