It's all over! Despite not
playing the last game against Real Madrid due to a calf strain, Diego
Tristán takes the Pichichi prize both in the Spanish league and in all
club competitions. Tristán is the second Deportivo player to top the
table following Bebeto's success in the 1992/3 season. Raúl still has a
remote chance of catching him in the overall chart, but he will need to score
four in the Champions League final on Wednesday night to do so. Don't we wish!
Morientes and Kluivert finished runners up in the league, with Catanha, Saviola
and Tamudo one behind them. Saviola's twenty-first of the season will probably
not be enough to get him in to Argentina's World Cup squad though, and Tamudo
and Urzaiz, who scored two at the weekend, will probably miss out on Camacho's
squad when he names it tomorrow. Luque scored one of the most important goals
of his young career to keep Mallorca in the first division after Fernando had
given Valladolid the lead with his fifteenth of the season, and Makaay helped
Deportivo take second spot with a goal against Real Madrid. All of this pales
into insignificance though with the feat of 13 year old Diong 'John' Mendy of
Barcelona's 'infantil A' side. He scored 97 goals in 29 games, and wasn't even
the team's penalty taker! His side won all 30 games of their league, with a
goals for and against record of 273-10. Sounds more like cricket.

PS. Two more goals to
add to our totals, and probably the most important of the season as far as
Spanish teams are concerned. Raúl's opener and Zidane's spectacular
strike (his twelfth of the season) against Bayer Leverkusen gave Real Madrid
their ninth European cup of their history and saved their centenary year.
Congratulations campeones! (16.05.02) |
