A very successful week in
Europe for Spanish clubs, with seven victories and a draw. Our top two
goalscorers Makaay and Dely Valdés both added to their tally in their
respective victories, the Dutchman starting off the comeback against Lens and
the Panamanian getting the only goal of the tie from the penalty spot. Valencia
players have been spreading the goals between them in recent seasons, and no
less than three of them enter our chart this week, Baraja, Carew and Mista.
Saviola got a brace in Moscow, Gastón Casas took his chance to get his
fourth of the season, and Guti and Iván Alonso both scored
again.
Another high scoring weekend
in the league is well, although the Pichichis did not feature much on the
scoresheets. Dely Valdés scored one penalty and had another saved,
Iván Alonso had a penalty saved and then scored a goal from normal play,
and Julio Alvaréz got his fourth penalty of the season to take him to
the top of the league Pichichi chart with six. Nihat enters the chart for the
first time after tucking away his fourth league goal, and Kluivert does
likewise after getting four in five games in all competitions.
The performance of the week
though can be summed up in one word: Ronaldo. He proved his critics wrong by
opening his account within 30 seconds of making his debut as substitute for
Real Madrid, and got another before the end. At this rate he should be heading
the charts by a week next Tuesday. (08.10.02) |
