A poor round of results for
Spanish teams in the Champions League midweek, but they made up for it with
some big scores at the weekend. Roy Makaay opened the scoring for Depor in
Lens, and added two more at the weekend against Rayo to move clear at the top
of our chart. Dely Valdés consolidated his second position as well with
his fifth penalty of the season against Espanyol, although his side lost to an
incredible 3-4 result in the end. Espanyol had only scored three times in six
matches before that.
Barcelona's Kluivert and
Luis Enrique share third spot after their team's 6-1 win against Alavés.
Kluivert got a hat-trick, as did Pablo Aimar in the first half of Valencia's
game against Athletic Bilbao. Carew was also in the thick of things and got his
fifth of the season as well, one less though than Baraja who helped himself to
another goal against Basel midweek. Finally Kovacevic's sixth league goal of
the season helped Real Sociedad to move three points clear at the top of the
league. They are not in Europe and are already out of the cup, but that could
be a big advantage as they go for their first league title in 20 years.
