Six goals in the two cup
semi-finals midweek, but none for any of our Pichichis and only two from
forwards, Osasuna's Aloisi and Recreativo's Xisco. The cup is bound to have a
new name on it this season, with Recre playing their first ever final despite
being the league's oldest club and Mallorca hoping for third time lucky after
two defeats in the nineties.
Roy Makaay's nineteen goals
in the league have taken him to second place in the European "golden boot"
table. With goals in the Spanish league counting double under the country
multiplier rule, that gives him 38 points, level with Arsenal's Thierry Henry
and four points behind Inter Milan's Vieri. The Dutch striker failed to score
this weekend after getting his name on the scorecard six weeks in a row, but
his team mate Diego Tristán did, albeit from the penalty spot, to
consolidate his second position.
It was a relatively quiet
weekend on the goals front after the last fortnight's excesses, with only Real
Madrid producing a "goleada". A Figo penalty and a rare header from Zidane put
them ahead, but it took late goals from super-subs Guti and Portillo to make
sure after Racing had pulled one back. Real Sociedad are still only a point
behind them though after their twin strike force Kovacevic and Nihat got a goal
apiece in an inspired first half against Alavés.
Elsewhere Dely Valdés
got his first league goal in five games to hold on to third place in the chart,
and Rubén Navarro and Pandiani both scored from the penalty spot to add
to their tallies for the first time in six and seven games respectively, which
presumably was a welcome relief. (11.03.03) |
