And so that's it. Game over,
and Spain once again has a golden boot amongst it's ranks. Roy Makaay added
another to his tally this weekend, his 29th in the league, to confirm his
position as Europe's leading goalscorer and equal Bebeto's club record. It
remains to be seen however whether he will be playing his football in Spain
next year. A real fight (or should be say "Real" fight) for second place
though, with Ronaldo scoring two to give Real Madrid the league title ahead of
Real Sociedad, for whom Nihat and Kovacevic got their names on the scoresheet
once again. Ronaldo and Nihat ended up drawing for the runners-up spot with 23
apiece, although Ronaldo finishes higher in our table for the goals he scored
in Europe. Elsewhere Saviola got one of the goals which kept up Barcelona's
100% record qualifying for European competitions, their win against Celta
taking them into the last UEFA spot above Athletic. Javi Guerrero, scorer of
two goals this weekend, could be in Europe too next season as Racing have
registered for the Intertoto cup. (25.06.03)
P.S. Pandiani and Eto'o
rounded off what could be their last game with Mallorca by getting their side's
three goals in their first ever cup final victory. Pandiani started things off
from the penalty spot and Eto'o added two more later in the game against
Recreativo to take both onto 19 goals in all competitions. Eto'o didn't have
much time to celebrate though as he jumped straight on a plane to take him to
Paris for the final of the Confederations cup, where he played for Cameroon
against France the following day. (30.06.03) |
