A poor performance on the
goalscoring front in Europe was made up for by the highest number of goals of
the season in this weekend's league games. Spanish clubs only scored four in
their Champions' League matches, with Raúl getting Real Madrid's only
goal against Partizan Belgrade and Diego Tristán doing likewise for
Depor against Monaco. Both were on the scoresheet again at the weekend, with
Raúl hitting two against a surprising Racing Santander to move up to
third in our chart and Tristán getting the winner against Valencia to
take his side above their opponents to the top of the table. Mista got another
for Rafa Benítez's side though, and he joins Ronaldo and Pandiani as the
league's top scorer with six.
No less than 36 goals in the
league in all, and some interesting names reappear in our chart this week,
including Tote, Salva and Mostovoi. Tote has only made three or four
appearances since returning from injury, but he has already replaced Palermo as
Betis first choice striker with four goals in that time. Salva is also showing
that he is far from finished now that Málaga have given him a chance,
and Mostovoi is always good for a goal or two. His penalty helped to sink
Espanyol even further as Celta won 0-4, with Milosevic also getting a goal but
refusing to celebrate out of respect for his old club.
Elsewhere Ronaldinho kept up
his good form with an excellent free kick, and Kovacevic headed the winner
again in the Basque derby against Osasuna. Correa also got a late consolation
goal against Barcelona to make it five for the season. There were two goals too
for Fernando Torres, and now that he has started scoring, it should only be a
matter of time before he is featuring in our pages as well. (27.10.03)
