A full round of European
matches midweek, with no less than eight Spanish sides taking part, four of
which in the Champions' League. Scoreless draws for Real Madrid and Real
Sociedad left both well placed to qualify for the last 16, but Celta Vigo were
the only ones to win, with Milosevic earning his side a penalty and then
scoring a second goal himself as they beat Ajax 3-2. Deportivo got three goals
as well, with two from Diego Tristán, but as most of you know by now it
didn't do them any good as Monaco got eight at the other end in the highest
scoring Champions' League match on record.
Depor bounced back at the
weekend though with a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad to move back to the top of the
table. Both of the Galicians goals were in fact scored in his own net by Real
defender Jauregi, but a sympathetic referee let him off the hook, naming the
scorers in his report as the last Depor players to touch the ball, Capdevila
and Pandiani respectively. Never ones to fly in the face of officialdom, we
therefore did the same.
Depor's other two rivals for
the top spot were both beaten, with Bodipo scoring twice to surprise Valencia
1-2 at home and Sevilla getting four in the first half (including one from
Darío Silva) against a shaky Real Madrid defence before Ronaldo got one
back for a final 4-1 scoreline. Ronaldo stays three goals ahead of Pandiani and
of Mallorca's Eto'o, who scored his side's last goal after Correa had hit the
net twice late in the first half against Murcia. Málaga striker Salva
was also on the scoresheet this weekend, hitting the winner for his side at
Albacete. (10.11.03) |
