The eight Spanish sides
still in European competitions only managed five goals between them in a week
overshadowed by the terrorist attacks in Madrid. The Champions League games
came before Thursday's tragic events, with Real Sociedad and Celta getting
knocked out and only Pandiani and Zidane scoring as Deportivo and Real Madrid
went through. The UEFA cup ties went ahead on Thursday evening despite requests
by all four Spanish sides to postpone their games, but nobody really wanted to
play football. Only Villarreal produced a good result, Sonny Anderson and
José Marí getting their goals against Roma, and Correa's strike
at Newcastle was cancelled out by four from Bobby Robson's side.
Anderson and Correa scored
again at the weekend as their sides both won, with Eto'o also getting one for
Mallorca from the penalty spot. Barcelona didn't get a goal on Thursday, but
Saviola and Ronaldinho were on target on Sunday to take their side's winning
run in the league to eight games. Elsewhere Spanish manager Iñaki
Sáez was at Málaga to watch Salva score a last minute winner with
his head in a bandage, and if Sáez didn't leave before the end to catch
a bus then he must now be thinking of at least giving the on-loan Valencia
striker a run out in Spain's friendly at the end of the month against Denmark.
