Another relatively low tally
at the weekend after the short break for international matches, with 23 goals
in the ten games at the weekend. That brings the total for the first 12 weeks
of the season to 271, some 32 goals less than last year, and it appears that it
is getting harder to score all the time.
All eyes this weekend were
of course on the Nou Camp for the big derby match between Barcelona and Real
Madrid, where the hosts ran out 3-0 winners. Eto'o got the first goal against
his former club to take his total for the season to twelve in all competitions,
and he also won a penalty which Ronaldinho converted. The bad news for the
Catalans was another serious knee injury, this time to Larsson, and the first
reports are that he could be out for six months or so.
The highest number of goals
though was in what would be considered a real derby to the English speaking
world (i.e. a game between neighbouring sides), with Real Sociedad coming from
two down to beat Athletic Bilbao. Nihat got two for the locals to signal his
return to the living, cancelling out earlier strikes from Ezquerro and Urzaiz.
Ezquerro comes in to our
chart for the first time as a result, as does Edu, who hit the winner for Betis
at Levante after Oliveira had equalised from the penalty spot, and Diego
Tristán, who unfortunately also left the pitch with an injury which
could keep him out until Christmas. Fernando Torres moved up to second in the
rankings after scoring against Numancia, and last year's Pichichi runner up
Baptista also got his name on the scoresheet again, getting the only goal as
Sevilla moved up to third in the league table. (22.11.04) |
