Samuel Eto'o got his first
goal since returning from the Africa Cup, and what an important one it was! His
strike against Chelsea in the Champions League gave Barcelona a good advantage
for the second leg. Villarreal are also well placed to go through to the next
round after a Riquelme penalty and a strike from Forlán gave them a 2-2
draw against Rangers. It was Forlán's first in the Champions League
proper for Villarreal, not counting of course the one he got in the qualifying
round against Everton.
Eto'o was in the news again
at the weekend, but for different reasons after he was once again subject to
racial abuse by a group of undesirables at Zaragoza. We comment more on that
elsewhere in our website, but Barça were inspired for the last ten
minutes of the game, Ronaldinho scoring from a penalty and Eto'o setting up
Larsson for a second goal to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Forlán was also on target again at Bilbao and he enters our chart once
again this week.
Two big scores this weekend,
with Espanyol bouncing back from their elimination from the UEFA cup to beat
Sevilla 5-0, Luis García getting a hat-trick including a penalty, and an
on-form Atlético Madrid winning by the same scoreline against
Málaga, with Maxi on the scoresheet after two early goals from Fernando
Torres, who would have had a hat-trick as well had Kezman not insisted on
taking a penalty himself later on (which he missed).
Two other new entries in our
chart this week, Dani helping Betis fans forget about Oliveira with his eighth
of the season, and Arango also taking his tally to eight after scoring the
winner for Mallorca against Real Madrid. Diego Tristán was also back on
form as he got the goal to give Deportivo the three points at Osasuna.
