An unbelievably low scoring
weekend, with only nine goals in the ten games. Statisticians had the record
books out with conflicting results, but it seems it was the lowest tally since
day 28 of the 1972/3 season, when 8 were scored amongst the 18 sides who were
then in the first division. The only team to get more than one this weekend was
Barcelona, who hit three against Nàstic, including one each for Saviola,
Giuly and Iniesta. David Villa was back on form though, getting his first ever
goal in the Anoeta stadium as Valencia won at Real Sociedad.
Thankfully there were a few
more goals in the cup midweek, with Saviola putting in a serious claim for a
place in Barça's starting line up (and a new contract?) with a hat-trick
against Alavés, making it five in the two legs and seven in the
competition to date. Getafe's Güiza was on target twice as his side won
2-4 at Valencia, surely the surprise of the round. Puñal got a brace for
Osasuna (including a penalty) as they knocked Atlético out of the
tournament, and Jankovic scored another cracker as Mallorca bowed out against
Deportivo. (22.01.07) |
