A bit of a disaster for
Spanish sides in the Champions League this week, with the big two Barcelona and
Real Madrid both bowing out at the last 16 stage against Liverpool and Bayern
Munich respectively, late goals by Gudjohnsen and Van Nistelrooy not enough to
take them through. That only leaves Valencia, who drew 0-0 against Inter Milan
to set up a quarter final tie with Chelsea. Mixed results for La Liga teams in
the UEFA cup too, with draws for Espanyol, Osasuna and Sevilla and a home
defeat for Celta.
All eyes this weekend though
were on the Nou Camp, where Barcelona and Real Madrid put their midweek losses
behind them in an exciting 3-3 draw. Van Nistelrooy (twice) and Ramos put the
visitors ahead three times, but Messi equalised each time for his first ever
hat-trick in Barça colours. He is just outside our chart having now
scored seven in all competitions. Van Nistelrooy's three goals this week
(including two penalties) put him joint top of our chart with
Kanouté.
On a league basis though
Diego Milito is now joint second with Ronaldinho after getting his seventeenth
of the season. Morientes has as many in all matches after a late equaliser at
Osasuna, and ex Pichichi Diego Forlán is up to ten. Güiza put
another claim in for a Spanish cap with a goal against Recre, and Portillo
comes in to our chart for the first time after getting Nàstic's winner
against leaders Sevilla. He will not be able to play against his old club Real
Madrid at the weekend though due to a clause in his contract when he moved to
the Tarragona based side last summer. (12.03.07) |
