Spain's involvement in the
Champions League this season ended when Valencia lost to Chelsea. Morientes
gave the Chés hope with a first half strike, but the English club turned
the scoreline around later on to join Manchester United, Liverpool and AC Milan
in the semis. If the English teams dominate that competition though, Spain
rules in the UEFA Cup. All three sides qualified for the last four, Werder
Bremen the odd one out. Sevilla got off to a great start at Tottenham, an own
goal and a Kanouté strike putting them ahead before Spurs came back to
draw 2-2. Espanyol held the mighty Benfica to a 0-0 draw, and Osasuna finished
off Bayer Leverkusen, Juanlu getting the goal to add to the three the Pamplona
based side scored in the first leg.
Another quiet weekend in the
league, with only 18 goals in all. David Villa got two, including one from the
penalty spot, to close the gap on Sevilla, and Raúl's strike was not
enough to prevent Real Madrid losing 2-1 to Racing Santander. Garay got both
goals for the Cantabrians from controversial penalties late on, making him the
highest scoring defender in the league this season. Elsewhere there were goals
for Fernando Torres, Sinama-Pongolle, Portillo and Baiano, his strike giving
Celta's new coach Hristo Stoichkov a win over local rivals Deportivo in his
first game in charge. (16.04.07) |
