What a weekend! 36 goals,
nine players getting a brace, but all of that is unimportant compared to the
turn of events. Everything happened in a period of 18 seconds near the end of
matches involving Real Madrid and Barcelona, with current "Pichichi" Van
Nistelrooy scoring his second of the night to save a point for his side, and
Espanyol's Tamudo doing likewise at the Nou Camp. Minutes earlier Diego Milito
had scored twice to give Zaragoza the lead against Madrid, and Messi had also
got two (including one "a la Maradona" with his hand) to put Frank Rijkaard's
side into what looked like an unassailable position for this year's league
title. All of that meant that Real Madrid have the edge over their rivals going
in to the last day.
Further down the table,
Diego Forlán got two (including one from the penalty spot) to overturn
Bilbao's early lead and take Villarreal into the UEFA cup spots, and Baiano
also clocked up a brace to give Celta a 2-3 win at Atlético, a result
which takes them just a point away from safety. And the following day
Sinama-Pongolle was on the scoresheet as Recreativo scored five past Deportivo
in a match in which neither side had anything to play for. (11.06.07)
