That's it then, apart from
next weekend's cup final. As expected Real Madrid are champions, although they
left it late to beat Mallorca. Van Nistelrooy couldn't help much though as he
left the field with an injury early on, and although he does take Spain's
Pichichi award, he was unable to get the goal he wanted to match Totti as
Europe's golden boot. Barcelona gave it their best shot, Messi scoring twice
and Ronaldinho another as they beat neighbours Gimnàstic 1-5, but with
head-to-head goal average taking preference in La Liga they had to hope for a
slip up from Madrid to take the title, which didn't happen.
Diego Milito finished second
on a league only basis, but more importantly for Zaragoza his goal saved their
place in the UEFA cup. And there were goals too for David Villa and for Tamudo,
who was presented with an award before kick off as the club's all time top
scorer. (18.06.07)
PS. Mali internationals
Diarra and Kanouté were both unhappy that they were ordered back from
international duty by FIFA to play in their respective sides' last games in
Spain, but in the end both proved decisive in their teams' victories, Diarra
heading the goal that gave Real Madrid the league title and Kanouté
scoring the goal that won the cup for Sevilla. The ex Spurs striker ended the
season with an impressive tally of thirty, just three behind Van the Man.
