Six Spanish clubs in action
midweek, although results could have been better. Real Madrid got off to a good
start with a goal from Raúl, but in the end they lost 2-1 to Roma. With
an away goal to their favour though they do have a good chance of turning
things around in the second leg , as do Sevilla, who lost 3-2 to
Fenerbahçe. Only Barcelona won their Champions League match however,
Messi scoring twice and Henry getting one in between in a 2-3 victory over
Celtic. A minor disaster in the UEFA Cup though, with Getafe the only La Liga
club to reach the last sixteen after Atlético Madrid and Villarreal were
knocked out. Guille Franco and Tomasson did score for Pellegrini's side against
Zenit, but they lost on the away goal rule.
On to the weekend, and Luis
Fabiano is racing ahead of this year's Pichichi after scoring two more in the
5-0 thrashing of Zaragoza. Barcelona also scored five the following day against
bottom club Levante, with Messi adding to his midweek brace and Eto'o getting a
second half hat-trick. Between injuries and international duty the Cameroonian
striker has only played six league games, but he has managed eight goals in
that time! He makes it to our chart for the first time, as does Guille Franco
who got one of Villarreal's goals in Bilbao.
Elsewhere Forlán
moved level with his suspended team mate Agüero with his seventeenth in
all competitions, and Edu got his sixth in seven games for Betis in a 1-1 draw
at Mallorca. Tchité got the only goal against Almería to give
Racing their first win in the second half of the season, and Valladolid's
Llorente is now the leading Spanish born striker in the league after clocking
up goal number twelve against Murcia. (25.02.08) |
