The Spanish cup final took
place midweek, with Valencia beating Getafe 3-1 thanks to goals from Mata,
Alexis and Morientes. It was Mata's fourth in the competition, making him joint
top scorer together with team mates Zigic and Joaquín, as well as Henry
(Barcelona) and Kanouté (Sevilla).
Even the cup win was not
enough to save the head of coach Ronald Koeman though after Valencia lost 5-1
to Athletic Bilbao at the weekend. David Villa's goal was a drop in the ocean
against the Basque floodtide, Llorente getting two to signal the end for
"Tintin". That was the last match of another high scoring weekend, with
Güiza closing to within two league goals of Luis Fabiano after scoring a
hat-trick for Mallorca (and creating a goal for Arango) to set a new club
record in the first division.
Real Madrid have virtually
tied up the league title, Raúl's early goal at Racing Santander setting
them on the way to a 0-2 win. With Barcelona drawing 0-0 against city rivals
Espanyol, Villarreal move up to second, Nihat on the scoresheet in a 2-0
victory over Valladolid. The gap at the top is ten points though, and it could
all be over by the weekend.
Racing are still in
contention for the fourth Champions League spot after surprise home defeats for
Atlético Madrid and Sevilla. Strikes by Agüero for the former and
Kanouté for the latter were cancelled out by three from Betis and four
from Almería (with two from Negredo) respectively. Finally Zaragoza
moved out of the relegation zone to the detriment of Recreativo, Oliveira
scoring twice in a 3-0 win which takes them above their opponents in the table.
