Some big goals this weekend,
not least of which those by Robben and Higuaín late in the match at
Osasuna to give Real Madrid their 31st league title. Nihat scored two for
Villarreal earlier in the evening to keep up the pressure on the leaders, but
they were up to the task. Third placed Barcelona bounced back from their
midweek Champions League defeat to beat struggling Valencia 6-0, with two each
from Henry and Bojan after Messi's opener from the penalty spot. How they wish
that one of those could have come in Old Trafford a few days earlier!
Bojan is being compared with
Raúl after passing the tally that the Real Madrid captain got in his
first season in La Liga, but two other 17 year olds were on the scoresheets as
well, Murcia's Dani Aquino, and Atlético's Nacho Camacho, who got a
brace the day before he came of age. Agüero got one in between Camacho's
strikes to keep his side in fourth spot.
La Liga's top scorer this
season though is now Mallorca's Güiza, who virtually ensured a place in
Spain's Euro 2008 squad after scoring two against Athletic Bilbao, his 13th in
10 games taking him past Luis Fabiano in the chart. Llorente got one back for
the Basque side to no avail. Luis García also kept his hopes of a trip
to Austria alive after a late penalty equaliser for Espanyol at Levante. And
going back to the theme of big goals this weekend, Ayala's last minute strike
against Deportivo may have saved the Maños from relegation. Exciting
stuff, and there are two more rounds of games again this week to look forward
to as the season rushes towards its finale! (05.05.08) |
