What an end to the season!
No less than 40 goals in the ten matches, the highest tally that we can
remember since we have been writing these pages. As expected, Güiza tied
up this season's Pichichi prize after scoring his 16th goal in 13 matches to
take Europe's Silver Boot behind Cristian Ronaldo. His early strike was the
start of the end for Zaragoza, who go down despite two goals by Oliveira. Luis
Fabiano was suspended this weekend and was therefore unable to put in a
challenge to Güiza, but he still tops our chart on an all club competition
basis with 24 in the league and another nine in cup competitions.
In Luis Fabiano's absence,
Kanouté picked up a brace in Sevilla's 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao,
although it was not enough to take them up to the Champions League spots. There
were another fifteen goals in two matches involving Spain's big two and two of
the already relegated sides, Van Nistelrooy getting two in Real Madrid's 5-2
win over cash-strapped Levante, and Eto'o and Henry starting things off in a
3-5 victory the day before over Murcia, ending Frank Rijkaard's reign at the
Nou Camp. Giovani hadn't scored all season in the league but he notched up a
hat-trick after that, his last goal the 60,000th in the history of La Liga.
Third in our rankings though
was Kun Agüero, who rounded off an excellent season with a goal for
Atlético at Valencia. It was mere consolation though as they fell 3-1 to
the Chés, David Villa proving he is ready for Euro 2008 with two more to
add to his hat-trick last weekend. Espanyol's poor recent form means that Luis
García will not be joining Villa in Austria, but he did at least convert
another penalty this weekend. By contrast Villarreal have three players in Luis
Aragonés's squad, and they set a new club points record after beating
Deportivo 0-2, Guille Franco making sure in injury time. He may well be joined
next season by Valladolid's Llorente, who got the goal at Recreativo that made
sure his side will stay up. (19.05.08) |
