We're back! La Liga kicked
off this weekend, just three and a half months after the end of last season.
Several official matches have already taken place though before this weekend,
and our early leaders come from those sides. There were lots of the goals in
the Spanish Super Cup for example, Real Madrid taking the title with a 4-2 win
in the second leg after Valencia won the first match 3-2. Van Nistelrooy got
three of Madrid's goals, and with another at the weekend at Deportivo he tops
our chart. Valencia's goals were more dispersed, Villa, Vicente and Mata
scoring in the first leg and repeating the act in their 3-0 league win over
Mallorca.
The current league leaders
though are Atlético Madrid, who completed a fantastic week with a 4-0
victory over Málaga. Diego Forlán got two (the only player in La
Liga to get a double on the opening day), and having scored as well in the 4-0
thrashing of Schalke in the Champions League qualifiers, he is second in our
chart. Barcelona will be joining Atlético in the league stage of the
Champions League after knocking out Wisla Krakow thanks to a 4-0 first leg
victory, Eto'o confirming he is staying on with a brace. And Deportivo won
through to the first round of the UEFA Cup after coming through the Intertoto
Cup and a qualifying round, Riki getting two of their goals on the way.
