La Liga returned for week
two after a short break for World Cup qualifiers, where David Villa (golden
boots and all) scored three in two matches for Spain to open Del Bosque's
campaign. The Valencia striker was on target again at the weekend, scoring one
of Valencia's goals against the only first division team he had never netted
against, Almería. It only served to earn his team a point though,
Negredo getting his second of the season for the locals in a 2-2 draw.
There were 27 goals in all
this weekend, although 14 of those came in two extraordinary games which both
ended 4-3. Sporting Gijón's Bilic thought he had got a hat-trick at
Sevilla on Saturday, although he will have to wait and see if his first goal is
given to him after the referee awarded it to Diego Castro. Whatever the case,
it didn't help as his team lost, thanks in part to two strikes from
Kanouté.
Goals galore at the Bernabeu
as well, Juan Carlos Moreno scoring two for a surprisingly good Numancia who
eventually lost to Real Madrid. Guti's first for the locals was Madrid's
5,000th in the league, and Higuaín and Van der Vaart were also on
target. The early leaders though are Espanyol, Luis García getting his
second of the season at Recreativo to give the Barcelona based side their
second win. Last week's leaders Atlético Madrid lost 2-1 to 10 man
Valladolid, Agüero being rested at the start after playing for Argentina,
but coming off the bench to score his team's only goal. (15.09.08)
