For the first time in four
seasons, all four of Spain's Champions League teams reached the last sixteen,
and they do so with one match still to play. Raúl got Real Madrid's only
goal to give them a 0-1 win at Borisov on Tuesday, and Villarreal drew 0-0 for
the fourth time in a row against Manchester United.
Barcelona were on
high-scoring form once again the following day, putting five past Sporting
Lisbon with Henry, Messi and Bojan on target, and Atlético Madrid beat
PSV Eindhoven 2-1 behind closed doors with Simao and Maxi the goalscorers.
Our UEFA Cup sides did well
on Thursday too, Mata starting things off for Valencia in a 0-4 win at
Rosenborg, Depor beating Feyenoord 3-0 and Racing Santander coming from two
down to draw 2-2 at Paris Saint Germain.
Goals again at the weekend,
33 of them in all, with Barcelona extending the lead at the top of the table
after a 0-3 win over Sevilla. Eto'o got the first and Messi two more to head up
our table this week. David Villa drops to third despite scoring for Valencia in
a valiant 3-2 win over Betis, with Mata on the scoresheet as well for the Ches
and Emaná for the Andalusians.
Atlético Madrid are
looking to close up on the leaders in the next month, with many of them
scheduled to play each other, and they moved to within three points of Sevilla
with a 4-1 win over Racing Santander. Tchité gave the Cantabrians the
lead from the penalty spot, but first half goals from Simao and Agüero and
two more from Forlán after the break wrapped things up.
Down in the lower reaches,
Athletic Bilbao moved out of the relegation spots with a 2-0 victory over
Numancia, new Spanish international Fernando Llorente getting them both for the
Basque side. (01.12.08) |
