The fifth round of the cup
saw the last two cup-winners through to the quarter finals, where they will
face each other. Last year's champions Valencia needed extra time to beat
Racing Santander, with Vicente scoring twice to enter our charts for the first
time. Sevilla had no trouble though seeing off Deportivo in the Riazor, with
Luis Fabiano making it six in total in the competition after netting a brace in
the first half.
It was not a great week for
the Galicians, who then went on to lose 5-0 against Barcelona in the league on
Saturday. Eto'o and Henry scored two each after Messi had started things off
for a record tally of 50 points as we reach the halfway point of the season.
Sevilla themselves beat Numancia later in the evening thanks to a strike from
Renato, taking them momentarily up to second, although Real Madrid moved back
above them on Sunday after a 3-1 win against Osasuna, Higuaín one of the
goalscorers.
Valencia dropped off the top
three after losing 3-2 to Athletic Bilbao, Villa's early goal being overturned
in the last minute by a Llorente penalty. Villarreal took advantage to move to
within a point of their neighbours, with Rossi converting a penalty himself in
a 2-0 victory over Mallorca. Elsewhere Málaga completed a record first
half of the season for a newly promoted side, Baha getting one of two penalties
in a 4-0 win over Espanyol. (19.01.09) |
