The moment of truth in the
Champions League this week, but only two of the four Spanish sides passed the
test. On Tuesday night Real Madrid were tonked 4-0 by Liverpool, but a goal
from Llorente at Panathinaikos took Villarreal through to the quarter finals.
And the following day two from Henry and two more from Messi and Eto'o helped
Barcelona cruise through against Olympique Lyon, whereas Atlético Madrid
couldn't score at Porto and went out on the away goal rule.
On to the weekend league
games, and another 37 goals. When is it going to stop (we hope never)? On
Saturday Real Madrid bounced back from their midweek disappointment with a 2-5
win at Athletic Bilbao, Huntelaar scoring twice and Higuaín finishing
things off with a late penalty after Llorente had kept the home side's hopes
alive. And the following day the goals continued to rain in, Zigic scoring
twice as Racing hit five against struggling Numancia.
Elsewhere Sevilla held on to
thrid spot with two late goals for Kanouté and Luis Fabiano in a 2-2
draw at Málaga, and Agúero and Forlán were on target as
Atlético Madrid came back to beat Villarreal 3-2. Barral converted a
penalty for Sporting to help the Asturians to a 3-2 win over Deportivo, and
Bojan netted a brace to keep Barcelona six points clear at the top, his first
in La Liga this season but his ninth in all competitions.
