Pichichis

Did we say last week that history could repeat itself? Well it went one better this time around, Diego Forlán accelerating past Samuel Eto'o with a hat-trick at Athletic Bilbao to virtually ensure the Pichichi and European Golden Boot titles for a second time. With the Champions League a priority, and an important international match coming up, the Cameroonian striker has asked Barça to free him up for the last league game, and has already congratulated his rival.

A thrilling penultimate weekend though, with Villarreal's Llorente scoring twice against local rivals Valencia to ensure a place in Europe, despite David Villa's 26th of the season in the league. A Pandiani header kept Osasuna's hopes of survival alive against a depleted Barça side who had other things on their minds, and a win in their last game against a demotivated Real Madrid will keep them up. Higuaín's strike gave Madrid the lead against Mallorca this weekend before the Islanders realised that their opponents are easy pickings, and went on to win 1-3 in the Bernabeu stadium.

Some important goals elsewhere as well, with Zigic taking Racing to safety and condemning Recreativo to the second division, and Bilic netting his twelfth of the season to give Sporting an important win at Valladolid. Everything boils down now to the last weekend, with no less than five teams trying to avoid that last relegation spot. (25.05.09)
