So how many times are we
going to say this season that the Pichichi battle is going to be between Messi
and Cristian Ronaldo? Certainly both have got off to a flying start, Ronaldo
getting the edge this week with two goals in the Champions League midweek at
Zurich, and two more at the weekend against Xerez. Madrid in fact scored ten
between the two games, with Guti now their second top scorer after netting in
both matches. Messi though is only one behind Ronaldo after getting two in
Barcelona's 5-2 win over Atlético, with Ibrahimovic and Agüero also
on the scoresheet.
So far though Ronaldo and
Messi don't have exclusivity over the Pichichi table, with Athletic's Llorente
also hitting two in the Europa League tie against Austria Vienna, and two more
in the league against Villarreal, and Valencia's David Villa firing home a
brace against his old club Sporting Gijón. Nice to see local boys doing
well! Speaking of which, two more of Spain's World Cup qualifying squad were on
target, Cazorla in the league and Mata in the Europa League, under 21
midfielder Javi Martínez got his third of the season for Athletic in the
league, and Brazil's Luis Fabiano also opened his European account in the
Champions League against Unirea Urziceni. All in all twelve goals in Europe and
39 in the weekend league fixtures - things are hotting up nicely.....
