Draws for all four Spanish
clubs in the mid-week Champions League games. On Tuesday Atlético were
knocked out of the competition after finishing 2-2 against Chelsea, despite two
cracking goals from Agüero, and Real Madrid drew 1-1 at AC Milan, with
Benzema the scorer for the Merengues. The following day Barcelona were held 0-0
at Rubin Kazan, and Sevilla drew 1-1 with Stuttgart to make sure of a place in
the knock-out stage. Their goal was scored by Jesús Navas, who later in
the week was called up for the first time by Spain. And on Thursday Spain's
representatives all finished the day second in their groups, with Valencia and
Athletic both drawing away at Slavia Prague and Nacional respectively, and
Villarreal beating Lazio 4-1. The ever-young Pires got two in the first quarter
of an hour, including a penalty, and Rossi converted a second penalty later on.
And so onto day ten of the
league, where 31 goals were scored in all. Villa held on to top spot in our
chart after Valencia beat Zaragoza 3-1, Mata and Pablo the other scorers for
the Chés. And Messi stays level with him after converting a penalty for
Barcelona against Mallorca, Pedro netting twice and Henry finally getting his
first official goal of the season before that. Luis Fabiano is only one behind
the leaders after scoring two against Villarreal, with Pires once again on the
scoresheet at the other end in a thrilling game which ended 3-2. And five goals
as well in the big city derby, Higuaín one of Real Madrid's three
scorers before two in a minute from Forlán and Agüero set up an
exciting finish. Quite a weekend! (09.11.09) |
