Strange results in the
midweek cup quarter finals, with victories for all four away teams and the
hosts all failing to score. Forlán's goal at Celta and the three strikes
by Xisco, Henrique and Canales at Osasuna saw Atlético and Racing
through to the semi-finals, but goals by Aduríz (Mallorca) and Bodipo
(Deportivo) were not enough to overturn the first leg victories of Getafe and
Sevilla.
At the weekend Pedro got the
only goal at Sporting to keep Barcelona clear at the top of the table, although
two from Benzema at Deportivo maintained the five point gap, and gave Real
Madrid a first win in 18 years at the Riazor stadium. Negredo also netted a
pair for Sevilla in their 2-1 win over Valencia, taking the Andalusians up to
fourth spot, three points now behind their opponents. (01.02.10)
