A bad week for La Liga sides
in Europe as the knock-out stage of the two competitions began, with none of
the five clubs in action able to win. On Tuesday Real Madrid were beaten 1-0 by
Lyon in their Champions League tie, and on Thursday there were home draws for
Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao and Atlético Madrid, and an away defeat for
Valencia, all in the Europa League. None of our Pichichis managed to
score.
The goals returned at the
weekend though, with a season best 37 in the ten league games. Real Madrid
bounced back with a 6-2 victory over Villarreal on Sunday, with Cristiano
Ronaldo starting things off with a cracking free kick, Higuaín netting a
couple and Nilmar getting one for the visitors. David Villa returns to the top
of the Liga Pichichi chart with two goals in Monday night's game against
Getafe, and Llorente converted a penalty as Athletic Bilbao stuck four past
Tenerife. On Saturday Sevilla were the first side to take points away from
Mallorca's San Moix stadium this season, Jesús Navas getting the first
of three, and Barcelona scored four against Racing, with Iniesta getting his
first of the season and Henry his first since the start of the new year.
