European champions Barcelona
are close to a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League after a 2-2
draw at Arsenal, although they will feel they should have already wrapped
things up after Ibrahimovic put them two up in the second half. The following
day Spain's two survivors in the Europa League faced off against each other,
with Diego Forlán and Antonio López twice giving Atlético
the lead before Manuel Fernandes and David Villa equalised for the
Chés.
Villa scored two more at the
weekend against Osasuna, including one from the penalty spot, as Valencia
consolidated third place. The Spanish international striker is still a long way
off the leaders for La Liga Pichichi though after Messi and Higuaín both
got on the scoresheet in their sides' respective wins. Cristiano Ronaldo also
converted a penalty in the game at Racing, and Forlán got one of the
goals for Atlético against Deportivo.
Sevilla's Kanouté and
Luis Fabiano scored as well as Sevilla beat Tenerife to return to fourth place,
and Nilmar helped Villarreal to a win at Valladolid which takes them to within
two points of the European spots. Finally Xerez's Mario Bermejo makes it to our
chart this week after scoring his ninth in the league, something of a feat for
a player from a side which promised earlier in the season to clock up the
lowest number of goals in the history of the first division. (05.04.10)
